STAT, Same-Day or Next-Day: Choosing the Right Medical Delivery

• NCE Team

In healthcare, "fast" means different things depending on what's in the cooler. A critical specimen for an emergency patient, a routine pharmacy restock and a box of signed paperwork all need to arrive safely, but they don't all need the same urgency. Choosing the right service level for each shipment protects patients and keeps delivery costs under control.

STAT delivery: when minutes matter

STAT (urgent) delivery is for shipments where any delay could affect patient care. Think emergency medications, critical lab specimens, blood products or surgical instruments needed for a procedure that's about to start.

At National Courier Express, STAT requests go to our always-on dispatch team. In most cases a courier can be dispatched within 60 minutes of your request, depending on your location and service level, and we run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays.

Good candidates for STAT

  • Specimens with short stability windows
  • Medications needed before a scheduled dose or procedure
  • Equipment or instruments for an urgent case
  • Anything your clinical team flags as time-critical

Same-day delivery: the everyday workhorse

Same-day delivery covers most routine medical logistics: scheduled lab pickups, pharmacy deliveries to patients and clinics, and transfers between facilities. It gives you a guaranteed same-day arrival without paying for an immediate dispatch.

Many of our clients pair same-day service with scheduled routes, so pickups happen at the same times every day. That consistency makes it easier for labs to plan staffing and for clinics to know exactly when their specimens will leave the building.

Next-day delivery: planned and cost-effective

Next-day delivery works well for shipments that are important but not urgent, like supply replenishment, non-urgent equipment and documents. Planning these a day ahead frees up capacity for the deliveries that can't wait.

Questions to ask before you book

  • What happens if this arrives late? If the answer involves patient risk, choose STAT.
  • Does it need temperature control? Cold-chain shipments need the right containers no matter the speed.
  • Is this a recurring delivery? A scheduled same-day route is often more reliable and more affordable than repeated on-demand requests.
  • Who needs to know when it arrives? Real-time GPS tracking and delivery confirmations by SMS or email keep everyone informed.
